(Refugee) Camp Adoption

Scheme 1954

This was an initiative introduced to Wales by Charles and Ada James of Cardiff Lodge. The scheme had already been adopted by Theosophical Societies in various countries as a response to appeals by the United Nations to help the world refugee problem. The strategy was for a TS to adopt a refugee camp with the object of trying to settle all the occupants.

In this instance Cardiff Lodge had adopted a refugee camp in Greece early in 1954 and the scheme was taken up at national level in October 1954.

Charles explained at a committee meeting that the need was for a steady stream of money, clothes and food. Charles and Ada took on the responsibility of collection and despatch of food and clothes to Greece while General Secretary, E Claudia Owen dealt with financial donations.

It was also explained that any member could adopt one refugee.

In March 1955 the TS in Wales received a report for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees outlining the excellent progress that had been made at the adopted camp. It was also recorded that £10 1s 6d was sent from Cardiff Lodge in February 1955.
