Esperanto

An artificial language invented for universal use (Circa 1887) by Polish physician Dr Ludovic Lazarus Zamenhof, with vocabulary consisting of roots common to the chief European languages with the ending normalized.

In January 1926, The TS in Wales received a letter from a Miss Wallis requesting the use of a room at Headquarters (10 Park Place, Cardiff) in order to conduct a lecture on Esperanto. This was quickly agreed and the lecture attracted a large and enthusiastic crowd of both members of the public and Theosophists.

This lecture generated considerable interest and there followed a course of regular classes in Esperanto, conducted by Miss Wallis, at 10 Park Place. These were open to the public and were attended by many Theosophists. Esperanto is neutral and considered easy to learn and for members of  an international movement such a the Theosophical Society, the benefits of learning this international language were obvious. The classes were also attended by members of the League of Nations Union.

Despite the initial enthusiasm, the classes were held regularly into 1927 but then reference to them disappeared from the records. It appears there has been no subsequent revival of interest in Esperanto within Welsh Theosophy.

There has been some sporadic general interest in Esperanto within the Theosophical Society worldwide with some Theosophical texts being produced in Esperanto.
